In the State of
Florida, there are currently over 1,200 AILA attorneys. That is a staggering number of lawyers to
choose from.
So, given the
vast number of immigration attorneys from which to choose, why choose the law
firm of Deborah J. Townsend, P.A.? In
making your selection, consider the following criteria:
State Bar Board Certification
Most State Bar
organizations, including Florida, have a certification process to help
consumers identify specialists in various areas of the law. Board certification recognizes attorneys’ special
knowledge, skills and proficiency
in various areas of law and professionalism
and ethics
in practice.
Board
certified lawyers are evaluated for
professionalism and rigorously tested for expertise. Certification is
The Florida Bar’s highest level of evaluation
of the competency and
experience of attorneys in the 26 areas of law approved for certification by
the Supreme Court of Florida. Only 7% of eligible Florida Bar members are
board certified.
The minimum standards for immigration and
nationality board certification include at least five years of full-time legal
practice of law. Immediately preceding application, at least 40% of the 5 years
of practice must have been substantially dedicated to immigration and
nationality law. Attorneys must complete at least 50 hours of continued legal
education credits within 3 years of submitting an application for
certification.
In
addition, attorneys are evaluated for character, ethics, reputation, and
professionalism. Finally, lawyers must undergo and pass a rigorous written
examination, which tests the attorney's knowledge of immigration and
nationality law. If an attorney passes all of the requirements, it is only then
that he or she can use the term "board certified."
Board
certification is valid for five years, during which time the attorney must
continue to practice law and attend Florida Bar-approved continuing legal
education courses. To be recertified, lawyers
must meet requirements similar to those for initial certification.
Deborah has
